Ah, I'm still in a learning curve for adept mother :) I hope I'm not the only one.
With Eli we just thought he was a great sleeper. I think it was more like, we weren't afraid to let him cry a little as he learned.
With Anna, we are/were afraid that she'd wake up Eli then we'd have two very tired children who wouldn't go to sleep. So we've spent the last 5 1/2 months picking her up soon after she'd start crying, rocking her to sleep, etc. She wouldn't sleep through the night and the sleep deprivation has been a little brutal.
Out of sheer need to have some calm after a rough fight to get Eli into bed, neither Aaron nor I were in a state to deal with a fussy baby (especially during a workout). So I just put her in her bassinet and let her cry. Well, she cried for about ten minutes and was a sleep and slept for 9 hours.
Hoping it wasn't a fluke, I did the same last night. This time she only cried for 30 seconds and silence. She slept for 7 1/2 hours! WHAT??!! I think We've been shooting ourselves by doing what we were doing. Anna's never been a "bad sleeper", we've been inept put to bedders. I think by keeping her up with us, she was over stimulated by us watching TV, and then the jostling of going to bed woke her up and it just continued in a cycle. So, now when we full on sleep train her, I'm more worried about Eli keeping her awake, because of his inability to stay in bed these days. Oh, and Anna's got her first tooth!

She already has her first tooth?! Goodness gracious! That seems fast! Emmy didn't get her first tooth until she was 10 months though...so I guess anything before that seems soon to me, but is completely normal and my child was the weirdo :). I'm a bit worried about the whole sleeping bit of having another baby. Emmy was an excellent sleeper too, but I think you're right, Tim and I weren't afraid to let her cry it out and figure it out on her own. Jackson and Emmy will be sharing a room...but we're gonna keep him in our room for a little while until he's sleeping through the night. It should be interesting though, since we'll be putting him to sleep before we go to sleep and then hopefully quietly going to bed a few hours later ourselves without waking him up. Maybe you should give me some tips :). I'm gonna need all the help I can get!
