London Day 4

Saturday was our first unscheduled day. So we decided to sleep all day...

NO WAY! You don't sleep when you've only got 5 days of sightseeing in a country you might never see again!

First we went to Portabello Road. I was super surprised Aaron wanted to go. He is not a shopping kind of guy and he must have known that my ingrained tendencies for souvenirs would become a battle. I have become better though. I only bought a hat and scarves. Anyway, Aaron actually did want to go and I wasn't going to complain that the only reason was the song from Bed Nobs and Broom Sticks ;)

We got some strawberries there and they must have been SUPER good because Eli ate the whole clam by himself.

After we left at 10 :30 and against a wall of people, so glad we went early, we headed of to the British Museum. Aaron and I LOVE Egyptian anything and what better place to see Egyptian artifacts outside of Egypt than in the British Museum?! Eli was pretty antsy by this time so we only got to see our must see exhibitians (Egypt and Assyria - we had just talked about Jonah and Nineveh in Sunday School)

After a picnic lunch outside of the Museum, we headed over to St Paul's Cathedral.

It is the largest Cathedral outside of Rome and you can hike up to the top of the dome (about 550 steps up). It is a beautiful cathedral and the crypt houses some pretty amazing people like Florence Nightengale, Horatio Nelson (admiral who won at the battle of Trafalgar), and the Duke of Wellington.

We did in fact hike to the top of the dome. NOT an easy feet with a tired and emotionally unstable two year old, but we did it!!

A view into the chapel from half way up the dome.

Us at the top of the dome

The view from the top was AMAZING!

A monument in remembrance of the London fire of 1666.

After the 550 steps down our legs felt like Jello but we decided to venture over the Millennial Bridge

snap a few pictures of Shakespeare's Globe,

see inside the Tate Museum of Modern Art (not for the art... sorry modern art lovers, just not my cup of tea) and then back to the hotel before our legs failed.

Here's some extra pics from this day...

AWESOME pictures. Thanks for sharing. I can't get the Portabello road song out of my head now. I'm with Aaron on that one. For some reason "bedknobs and Broomsticks" was a very important movie to our childhood.

I don't know why I'm torturing myself by looking at your pictures...it just makes me jealous! But, so so so glad you guys had the opportunity to go and had so much fun! I admire you for being brave enough to take a two year old with you! We have friends who travel all the time, and they always leave their little boy with family. My dad served his mission in London, so seeing it helps me to know why he loved it so much :).
